Passion is the fuel that ignites your soul. Passion is a commanding emotion. It’s a boundless enthusiasm of devotion to a cause, a tireless diligence. One common denominator of successful people is that they are passionate. Passion moves people. Whether you are successful in giving a speech, writing an article, leading people or selling a product is directly related to your intensity of passion.

1. LIVE THE FEELING THAT YOU ARE WORTHY OF HAPPINESS AND DESERVING OF SUCCESS. What’s preventing most people from enjoying a passionate life is that they feel unworthy; they feel undeserving. This attitude breeds and slowly begins to deteriorate your chances of experiencing more happiness and success.

2. ASK THE PASSION QUESTION. If you could rub Aladdin’s Lamp what wish would you ask for? Successful people ask themselves: “What would I do if I knew I could not fail?” If you could have anything, be anything or do anything, what would it be? If you knew you could not fail what would you succeed at? Contemplate your answers and begin to think about and take action on realizing your aspirations. Remember, nothing is more invigorating than doing what you enjoy!

3. FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTHS. Focusing on your weakness can dissipate your energy. Each of us is born with a distinctive ability. What’s yours? Spend the majority of time doing what brings you enjoy. Delegate or outsource the things which give you less satisfaction. This enables you more time to what gives you the most pleasure. Action seems effortless when you engage in your strengths, and your performance is energizing and exhilarating.

3 REAL LIFE HABITS FOR SUCCESS ® PRONOUNCE YOUR BRAND

Your own personal name as a brand is equally as important as giant brands like Apple, GE, Volkswagen and Starbucks. You are your brand. Your brand, your name, is your reputation. You might have a common name or a unique one. The question is: What do you want your name to stand for? You have a strong name if you choose it to be. Shakespeare said, “What’s in a name?” That’s up to you.

Your brand is what differentiates you from other people. A strong personal brand will get you hired after a job change, or a call from a friend who needs your help, or a visit from a customer who wants to purchase a product/service you offer. In today’s business environment people do business with people, not just a big company.

1. DEVEOP YOUR CORE MESSAGE. What is it that you stand for? This message should be used in your conversations, your print ads, your television or radio ads and appearances. What one sentence best illustrates you? If you are not sure, ask your clients, fans or constituents on how they best describe you. Use this as a guide to articulate your message to share your personal brand.

2. CREATE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES. Strong branding creates an emotional tie. Feelings drive behavior and have the power to attract or repel. People want to be associated with positive feelings not negative ones. Likeability is strengthened through a positive vibe. How can you make sure you are emitting the energy that makes others feel good? Create the activities and conversations that are enveloped in optimism.

3. USE ENDORSEMENTS. Nothing is better than other people sharing their positive thoughts and experiences they’ve had with you. When you proclaim your value it is great, yet when others shout your value it is much better. People tend to believe what others say about you than you about yourself. Make the time to garner, in writing or with video and audio, about how great you are and the value you provide. Let the voice of others help to strengthen your brand.

The ability to achieve is within each of us. Goals and dreams come true predictably and reliably when we follow a proven pathway.

1. EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF YOUR WRITTEN GOALS. If it’s not in writing it doesn’t exist! Less than five percent of the population set goals in writing. Written goals produce better results than if goals are vaguely floating through your mind. Written goals are powerful roadmaps that can more easily lead you to the destination of your choice. Define what you want, in writing, giving thought and attention to all aspects of life such as health, business, relationship and recreational. Review them often!

2. POST YOUR GOALS WHERE YOU CAN VIEW THEM DAILY. We get out of life what we most think about. That’s why it is crucial to post your goals where you can view them on a regular basis. It reminds you of what is really important to you in life. It is so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day distractions of life. One incredible way to focus your thought-power is to place your goals in your office on the wall, in your garage on large poster paper, or on 3×5 cards you can put in your car or in your calendar organizer. Reminding yourself of what you want is one of the best ways to get what you want.

3. PRAISE YOURSELF UPON THE COMPLETION OF A GOAL. The most powerful reinforcement is self reinforcement. Every time you do something that moves you in the direction you want to go, you have to reinforce that behavior. Give yourself a pat on the back or tell yourself what a great job you are doing. Big or small, whenever you do something right, praise yourself. For reinforcement to work, you must reinforce in the moment. Not before and not after, right then and there. You have dozens of successes throughout a given day, so remember to be good to yourself!

ASKING FOR HELP

You can get what you want by asking for help. We ask coworkers for help on projects, we ask our friends and family to help us with everything from babysitting the kids to moving furniture to asking for money in a time of need. From the cradle to the grave we ask for help in order to get what we want. But asking for help, and getting help, is an art.

1. KNOW WHEN TO ASK FOR HELP. Asking for help is a balancing act. Some people have a hard time asking for help and others ask too much. Don’t ask for help when you are perfectly capable of doing it yourself. If you ask for help too often people will be less inclined to help you. Save your requests for when you really need them.

2. BE COURTEOUS BY SAYING “PLEASE” AND “THANK YOU”. Words have the power to create or destroy relationships. Words that will work in your favor are “please” and “thank you”. Saying “please” before a request increases your probability of receiving a request. And saying “thank you” increases the probability of getting more help in the future.

3. GIVE BACK. Reciprocation makes the world go around. If you ask for help be prepared to give help in return. People are more likely to honor your requests for help if they know you will help them when they are in need.

The only difference between you and your competitors is the level of customer service satisfaction you offer. The path to excellent customer service begins with a genuine commitment to create and maintain a service-oriented company culture. Here is a list of customer service practices you might want to implement or strengthen.

1. USE A FRIENDLY GREETING. Scary but true, most people skip right over this simple customer service practice. It spells out to your customer that you truly appreciate that they decided to do business with you and your company. One of the best ways to initiate a friendly attitude is to greet every customer who walks through the doors of your business. It’s no secret that people prefer to be associated with, and greeted by, friendly people.

2. PROVIDE ACCESS TO INFORMATION. You ask a person behind the counter and they are not sure; you look for a sign, nothing in sight; you enter every key word you can think of, and still no satisfaction; you are transferred from person to person, but no one seems to know what to do. The key is to make sure you provide customers with access to the information they need to do business with you! It’s imperative that everyone, in any organization, be armed with the information needed to answer the potential questions of customers. And, if they are unable to provide the necessary information, they need to at least know where to find the necessary information.

3. UNDER PROMISE & OVER DELIVER. Too often, out of the want to please customers, employees promise more than they can deliver. The way to win with customers is to under promise and over deliver. For example, say it takes five business days to ship a product to a customer. Lately though, it has only been taking two days. Avoid promising two day shipping. Let them know it can take up to five days. When the package arrives early, you become the hero. You get the idea! Always follow through on what you promise.

“Nature has given us two ears but only one mouth.” Benjamin Disraeli

3REAL LIFE HABITS FOR SUCCESS ® RESOLVE YOUR CONFLICT

Conflict is part of life, almost as unavoidable as the common cold. Even the most intelligent and ethical people will differ. Sibling rivalry, friendship feuds and disgruntled co-workers are part of life. With the right tools conflict can produce great results. It can actually bring people closer together when the conflict is resolved.

1. FOCUS ON SOLVING PROBLEMS NOT CONTROLLING OTHERS. There are many ways to peel a potato. The goal is to not solve the problem “my way” or “your way” but rather to develop a solution that meets everyone’s needs. We must practice the “it’s not about me” principle. Get to the core of the problem so you can solve it, and leave your ego behind!

2. SCHEDULE A MEETING. Problems don’t go away because they are ignored. Have a sit down. This is the intervention. The air needs to be cleared and should occur behind closed doors. This gives the people involved the chance to work things out so they don’t erupt into something larger than they are. Talking about it can function as a safely relief valve.

3. USE AN UNBIASED THIRD PARTY. Who do you know, or who can you call upon that does not have an interest or something to gain. This can be a consultant or an arbiter, or a referee, or an impartial and honest co-worker. This is an opportunity to hear an objective opinion on how to possibly solve the issue.

“Curious things, habits. People themselves never knew they had them?” Agatha Chirstie

3 REAL LIFE HABITS FOR SUCCESS ® BUILD YOUR TEAM

Yes you! Synergy is defined as a combined action; a compatibility and cooperation of individual elements—the sum of the parts being greater than their individual components. Unless you do your part within the equation then the equation will not work. You don’t have to be a renowned physicist to understand this concept.

1. FULFILL YOUR OBLIGATION. Give 100 percent of yourself. Give little regard if you think others might not follow through. Do your absolute very best to do your part. Just make it happen.

2. DEFINE THE EXPECTATIONS OF ALL TEAM MEMBERS. To create a team that works together well, all members must know and agree on what it is they are going to contribute to the team’s purpose and what types of behaviors are appropriate. Does everyone know what the goals or the measurable objectives are of the team? Does every team member know and understand their specific role within the team? Don’t make it an international mystery. Spell out what needs to be done, and who needs to do what.

3. TREAT EVERYONE AS IMPORTANT. Everyone piece in the puzzle is significant, whether it be in the spot light or not. Most people are so busy in their own lives that they aren’t in the least bit interested in the lives of others. Why should they be? No one seems to be concerned for them! The truth is that your life will be beautifully enhanced by tuning into the lives of others. The bottom line is respect!

We are living in a moment in time that humanity has dreamed about for millenniums. However, with all the modern conveniences and technical miracles there comes a price. To enjoy our lives fully, and truly be without the debilitating affects of stress, we need the tools and habits to help put it all in perspective.

1. ENJOY THE RELAXING PHYSICAL SENSATION OF BREATHING PEACEFULLY. Whenever you feel anxious or nervous, take a few deep breaths, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. When breathing out, say to yourself, “three.” On the next out-breath, “two.” Continue to “one” and repeat the cycle. This will send a message to your brain and body that it’s time to relax and calm down.

2. PRACTICE THE ART OF FORGIVENESS. The person who seeks revenge should dig two graves. The act of forgiveness is actually an act of self-care as it releases anger, resentment, pain or fear, and allows room for joy, happiness, peace and love. Forgiveness is something you do for yourself, not for others. You can achieve forgiveness by writing a letter to a person who has offended you. Say everything you want to say and then destroy the letter. Another tool that may help is to talk to the person if possible, owning the part of the issue that is yours. Or speak with a trusted friend, clergy or counselor to get constructive feedback.

3. USE A ONE MINUTE BODY RELAXATION TECHNIQUE. Body relaxation is the first step in learning how to eliminate tension. Remove extraneous stimuli and allow yourself to be alert and to concentrate more intensely while being relaxed at the same time. The technique can be performed lying down or sitting in a chair. Close your eyes. Starting from the head, slowly scan your body all the way to your toes. As you scan, notice any tension in the body (on the forehead, around the eyes, clenched hand, etc.), then relax the area by saying the word “relax.”

3 REAL LIFE HABITS FOR SUCCESS ® BANISHING BURNOUT

Burnout is the new personal and professional hazard. If you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, zapped of energy and pessimistic you might be experiencing burnout. You can practice a few habits to send burnout into exile.
1. ELIMINATE NON-ESSENTIALS. Burnout’s main precursor is taking on too many responsibilities. Trying to pour water into an already full glass only makes a mess. Working 50+ hours at the office, helping the kids with homework, attending to domestic duties, serving on a non-profit board and so on… Sorry, you’re not Super Man or Wonder Women, you’re human. Focus the majority of your energy and time on top priorities. Focus on the most important and let go of the rest.

2. TAKE TIME FOR DAILY RENEWAL. A day without solitude is insanity. Take time to step away from the chaos that we can encounter in everyday life. Enjoying a mid-day lunch with friends or a massage at the spa can be helpful. So can a day of fishing or skiing, an hour of sculpting or painting. Mediation, journaling, vacations, hobbies, going for a 3 mile run or walk or vegetating on the couch, can renew your energy.

3. OUTSOURCE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES. Face it. You shouldn’t let the plumbing overflow because you don’t want to deal with it. You needn’t delay on your taxes because you don’t have the knowledge to prepare for it. Is there really a need to change the oil in your car, or let someone else do if for you? Would a tutor help your kids with their studies, would delegating more to your assistant be helpful, and more effective? The key is to utilize industry professionals whenever you can. Don’t be afraid to delegate responsibilities as long as you communicate expectations—and inspect the final results!

Everyone wants to feel special even if they won’t admit it. The primary way to make others feel special is to acknowledge them. We like to be acknowledged for our accomplishments whether at work, in school or at home.

1. TELL THEM YOU APPRECIATE THEM. Use hand written notes or say in person that you appreciate them. Don’t expect people to be mind readers. If they deserve appreciation then tell them. If you feel it, share it. Research has shown that appreciation is more important than monetary rewards. Get in the habit of appreciating others. Mother Teresa said, “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”

2. AWARD THEM BY SURPRISE. Unexpectedly take them to breakfast or lunch. Throw a surprise party with family and friends. Put their picture on the lobby wall. Send flowers, a singing telegram or give a gift as a token of appreciation. Publicly acknowledge them for their accomplishments when they don’t expect it.

3.BE GENUINE. Appreciation that is not genuine will fall flat on its face. Don’t try to fake making others feel special. They will see right through it and your efforts will be counter productive.

Her book is for professional working parents with school-aged children. It focuses on five key lessons about working, parenting and life that author Michelle Nichols learned in the last 10 years since the sudden death of her son, Mark, at age 8 ½ years old from brain cancer. She challenges the idea of “work-life balance” and instead, recommends “family first and work a close second.” The lessons include the importance of hugs, seeing the positive, laughter, faith, and daily hugs. Readers have said the book made them laugh, cry and think.

The more people you know, the more opportunities you have. You have incredible access if you are networked with a good mechanic, investor, realtor, financial planner, doctor, engineer, teacher—anyone! Here are 3 habits to help increase and strengthen your personal network.

1. PICK A NETWORKING GROUP. Get involved with an organization that fits your personality. You can get involved with a civic or community organization such as The Red Cross, Humane Society, Rotary, or whatever. There are also business specific networking groups, in person or online. Choose one. Become a member. And, participate!

2. GO STRIKE UP A CONVERSATION. You can just sit there among a group and wait for people to come to you, but that is not effective networking. You have to take responsibility to strike up a conversation. Remember to keep it positive and focus on the other person instead of yourself. This tool applies to all group functions whether it is a dinner social event, party or standing in line at the grocery store.

3. STAY IN TOUCH. Grab a business card or at least make sure you get their first and last name so you can record or data base who they are. You can send them “nice to meet you” cards or holiday cards, emails, phone calls or personal meetings. You can make it a point to speak with them at networking functions or eat lunch or get coffee together. There is an unlimited amount of ways to stay in touch.

Jeffrey Benjamin speaks with AnnaMarie Squailia. Author Finalist in the Children’s Educational category National Best Books of 2008. Her book, The Hidden Swan, is a tool for parents to teach their children about the many different aspects of life. Building good communication skills between a parent and child is one of the most important aspects of raising children.

We can all agree that respect is one of the building blocks of great relationships. How do we create respect with people? We can improve all of our relationships with one word: respect.

1. FOCUS ON GIVING RESPECT. The more respect you give the more you get in return. Unfortunately, we get caught in the trap of waiting for others to show respect before we give it away. Look for ways to demonstrate your respect for others throughout the day such as: listening to them, not wasting their time, complimenting their work, and being polite.

2. PROMOTE AN ATTITUDE OF EQUALITY. People who treat others as inferior imply that they themselves are superior. Everybody wants to feel valued, which means nobody likes to feel less important than another person. Acting superior communicates a poor message to your customers, coworkers, family and friends. An attitude of equality conveys respect for others, which in turn increases the probability that respect will be reciprocated.

3. DO WHAT YOU SAY. A great way to lose the respect others have for you is to do one thing and say the opposite. If you tell someone you are going to be at an appointment and you do not show, you lose respect. If you say you will handle a project but you don’t handle it, you lose respect. Match your walk with your talk.

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of ways to improve our quality of communication. Here are 3 tools you can use to enhance your quality of communication.

1. COMPLIMENT THE IDEAS AND WORK OF OTHER PEOPLE. It’s been said that you can’t take a step up if you are busy pushing others down. Acknowledge your friends and peers when they do a great job. Too often people don’t compliment others for their contributions. It takes only a few seconds to offer an accolade or a few kind words of appreciation. Tell your kids that you’re proud of them, thank someone for his or her keen insight, praise a diligent co-worker, tell your spouse you appreciate his or her work. Others are much more likely to help you if they feel their efforts are noticed.

2. LET OTHERS CONFIDE IN YOU. Allow others to reveal in confidence their innermost thoughts, concerns and dreams. The best managers, the best family members and the best of friends are people we can trust in sharing our thoughts and feelings. When people are confiding in you, remind them that what you talk about is 100 percent confidential. Maintain your code of confidentiality.

3. GIVE CREDIT WHEN CREDIT IS DUE. Cite your sources, publicly applaud the ideas of others and recognize the people in your life that have helped you. A deep sense of admiration and respect is built when a person gives credit to others. The opposite occurs when a person claims all the credit for him or herself; people will go out of their way to sabotage another out of severe lack of respect.

IMPROVE YOUR PUBLIC SPEAKING

Public speaking is often associated with fear, anxiety and stress. On the flip side it is associated with confidence, leadership and opportunity. Most people would rather jump through rings of fire than give a speech. Just the thought of speaking in public can create sweaty palms. Here are 3 habits to improve your public speaking.

1. USE AN ATTENTION GETTER. Light a fire under your audience. Gain attention by telling a quick joke, asking a question, offering a famous quotation, sharing a story or citing a statistic. Use this technique whether you are speaking to an audience for three hours of thirty seconds. An attention getter allows you to focus the mind of your audience. Ultimately, it draws your audience in to listen to what you have to say.

2. ORGANIZE YOUR MAIN POINTS. This is the central content of your message. Avoid making your audience decipher your key points or ideas. Every great written or verbal presentation is well organized. This makes it easy for your message to be understandable and increases your listener’s faith in your expertise. Take a few minutes to jot down your main or central ideas before offering them to others. Shorter presentations should contain less main points. Avoid packing too many main points into your presentation.

3. ASK FOR FEEDBACK. At times we are so blinded by ego that we fail to see our own dysfunctional behavior. Ask your friends, family and business associates, and of course your audience, to give you suggestions on how you might improve your communication. Encourage them to give you honest insight. Let them know that you value their perspectives and opinions. This can also be achieved by having your audience fill out an evaluation form. Be sure to follow their suggestions. You can also video or audio record your presentation and review it to see how you can improve. Major sports teams video record the game so they can review and improve.
